Event Details

In this 15-hour course,
teachers will read a practical, teacher-authored text that addresses the unique demands faced by educators who work with students who are disinterested, disenfranchised, and/or emotionally disturbed. Course leaders Denna Crowe and Michelle Guzman have many years of experience with alternative education, and they have organized this class specifically for teachers who work in difficult settings with at-risk students. Working together, participating teachers will explore strategies that can transform student motivation and performance.

Participants will read Teaching Outside the Box: How To Grab Your Students By Their Brains, by LouAnne Johnson. The book includes:

• Checklists for preparing your classroom, your paperwork, and yourself.
• Proactive strategies for preventing misbehavior.
• Practical suggestions for effective classroom management.
• Activities that foster positive teacher-student connections.
• Ideas for addressing student brain-dominance and learning preferences.
• Tips for incorporating higher-order thinking skills into lessons.

MEETING DATES, TIMES, AND LOCATION:

Teachers will attend five meetings from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on the following Wednesdays:
June 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. (Make-up sessions are available if you have a date conflict.)

Meetings will be held at SJCOE (Room TBA); leaders may include an online component to better address participant needs.

FREE ENROLLMENT for local teachers!

The $50 registration fee (payable at the opening session) will be fully refunded to teachers from Manteca, Ripon, Tracy, one.Program, and other schools in south San Joaquin county, as long as those teachers complete the course requirements. (GVWP Teacher Consultants also qualify for the registration refund.) Teachers from other districts are invited to join the class; their registration fee is nonrefundable.

A $25.00 materials fee is payable at the opening session of the class. (When you register online, you will be asked if you already own the text for your grade level. If you own the text, your materials fee is just $10.00.)

One unit of extended education credit will be available for purchase from CSU Stanislaus.
